What should I pay attention to when volunteering?
Be sure to ask for information in advance about the volunteering you are going to do. The organization is legally obliged to let you know at least the following. This can be done via a volunteer contract, or via an oral or written notification:
The purpose of the organization: what do they do?
The type of organization: for example, an unincorporated association, CVBA-VSO, municipal administration…
The insurance taken out for you as a volunteer (at least civil liability!)
The allowances that you may be reimbursed, and how and when you receive them
The duty of confidentiality you have as a volunteer
Do you have a replacement income? Then you may have a duty to report to your paying agency. Therefore, check with your paying agency in advance to find out exactly what you need to do to keep your replacement income in order.
