Do you have to compensate volunteers?

Dennis Geerts Last updated: Jul 27, 2026

As an organization, you are not obliged to give your volunteers a compensation. The starting point is that volunteers mainly derive satisfaction and appreciation from something other than material things.

Of course, that does not mean that a volunteer should be financially worse off: as an organization, you can provide an expense allowance, for example for travel or other costs incurred by the volunteer.
